Entry Description |
Short Title:
Modular temporary construction wall/barricade |
Short Description:
Temporary wall system consisting of panels and extruded joining parts that are 100% recyclable, 100% reusable and can be 100% recycled into new product (zero waste). Replaces products that are used for a short period of time (1-18 months) and end up in a landfill. |
A discussion of design for adaptability and disassembly techniques incorporated:
Disassembly - all parts of product are either perpetually reusable or perpetually recyclable into new parts for product using standard recycling and manufacturing equipment and methods already in place and practice. |
Environmental Implications:
In replacing conventional materials used for similar applications there is approximately 1 ton of material saved from the landfill per 70 l.f. of standard height wall. As well as eliminating emissions of vehicles and equipment used to haul and process materials, as well as mining (or other harvesting) of natural resources (wood, gypsum) and all of the emissions and byproducts created in those processes. This product also eliminates (by not producing) airborne contaminates and construction dust associated with what is industry standard at this point. |
Green job creation or other economic/policy implications:
This product utilizes some manufacturing processes that are currently suffering due to the state of the automotive industry, keeping some of the current workforce and facilities operational that would otherwise be suffering or shut down. It also uses the same construction labor force that is already in place for conventional projects. There is very little change of practice or training required to transition current facilities/methods/workforce into producing and installing this green, sustainable product. |
How the entry advances lifecycle building education:
Each individual wall will have removable vinyl signage that promotes using re-usable and recyclable products.Info will include environmental benefits as well as the amount of landfill waste reduced by each particular length of wall. |

Entry Metrics |
The measurement of environmental and economic impacts of the innovation entry: Every 70' of this wall will replace 1 ton of debris from conventional temp wall (metal stud and drywall). Low end estimates for the amount of temp wall standing on any given day throughout the U.S. is 50 miles. That breaks down to 3'800 tons of debris constantly being built and demolished. This wall also reduces temp wall installation and removal time by over 90%. A 12'Tx40'L wall can be completely assembled in about 30 minutes. A conventional msdw temp wall of the same size requires about 50 man hours to complete.(level 3 finish w/primer & paint) Man hours saved = reduced insurance premiums and jobs start sooner = saved time and money |

Discussion of Green House Gas reduction implications of the entry:
As a re-usable and recyclable product, this wall reduces the emissions produced in the on going mining of gypsum and during the manufacturing process of drywall, metal studs, plywood, drywall tape, drywall mud, screws, nails, and any other product used in the construction of conventional temp walls. It furthermore reduces vehicle emissions produced during the delivery process as well as those created during refuse removal.Thereby preserving the energies and fuels used in all the above processes. It also eliminates the need for plug in power tools on the job such as drills/mixers, compressors, paint sprayers, screwguns etc. |
